Search Engine Marketing
Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is simply marketing for leads and buyers from the search engines. This means that SEM can be broken into two channels: Paid SEM and Organic SEM.
Paid SEM is where the advertiser pays the search engines to have their listings show up for the chosen terms for that site. The search engines use a pay per click model to charge advertisers to do this. This means that the advertiser pays a certain amount for each visitor to that page. The largest pay per click network is Google’s Adwords. In the Google search results pages, the adwords results turn up as “Sponsored Links” at the top and to the right of the page.
Organic SEM is the process getting listed on the main part of the search engine results pages based on the algorithm of that search engine. Organic search listings tend to get more clicks than the pay per click listings, and are free. Google, is the leader in search engine technology, and also has the highest market share. Their organic listings are comprised of a combination of:
- Static Web pages
- Google Local business listings
- Videos from sites such as You Tube
- Google News results
And more..
As Google develops its algorithm to provide the most relevant listings, and the other main players – Yahoo and MSN attempt to catch up, the search engine landscape is an ever-changing landscape.
