During Christmas, I sent out a personal letter to all of our clients. I’d like to share an excerpt from this letter here:

“Right now, the average Australian spends more time online than they do watching TV.

It’s no wonder that all indications suggest that next year top Google rankings will be more important than they have ever been, and will continue to be more and more important as time goes on for the foreseeable future.

The internet continues to grow massively as a media channel used by consumers and businesses to make more buying decisions (at a time where all other advertising channel consumption have remained steady and newspaper consumption declining).

It’s no wonder officials expect online sourced sales will continue to grow at 12% per annum till at least 2012 in Australia. The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the online retail industry did $24 billion dollars in 2009 (we are waiting for the final 2010 figures) – that is not even including offline sales that were first found online, a figure which is most likely far bigger than the $24 billion!”

So, how can you get your company ahead in 2011 if you are not with us to make sure you or in front of customers who want to buy?

These four objectives are simple yet very powerful and profitable, and form the foundations (along with other objectives) of work for our clients:

1. Continue building barriers to entry so that your site is so far ahead of your competition, they won’t know what to do to keep up with you.

2. Make sure your campaigns are targeted. Understand where your target market are and do everything you can to get in front of them.

3.  Have a long term strategy for dominating your niche in your marketing medium, and build, every single day to achieve that domination.

4. Engage companies who are as vested in your success as they are. Paying flat fees while getting more and more success in your marketing campaings is one way to achieve this. e.g. our fees are flat every month, but the longer our clients are with us, the more keywords they are ranked in the top 10 for, the more traffic they get to their site, and the more profits they make in their business. In month 22, they will still be paying us the same, but making way more money than they did in month 12. And a year after month 22 they will make even more. Online marketing done right can deliver compounded, highly profitable results!

A good team around you is step one.

I’ve had the privilege of personally evaluating over 300+ businesses this last few years, and I find that those that are the most successful (earn an extra 80k – 1.5M+ a year from our efforts) have most or all of the below 5 point in common. I’ll make sure to dedicate the next 5 points to discuss each one of these in more detail.

In the meantime, here is a brief summary of the 5 points:

  • Responsibility – clients who do well continue to take responsibility for their success online – they see us as merely a part of their sales cycle. Rather than depending on us, they leverage us with their other marketing efforts. They never stop trying different things. They are relentless and have an open mind.

  • Understanding – they have a clear understanding that selling online comes down to traffic and conversions.  The formula simply is Traffic + Conversions = Profits. For businesses who sell offline, conversions are broken down into Conversion into a lead (phone enquiry /email enquiry) and a conversion into a customer (this is where your sales skills come in). Successful sites aim to optimise each of these elements individually to create a great compounding effect.

  • Long term view –  SEO, is unlike any other marketing channel, in that the main benefit is in the compounding effect of an integrated effort (where you are getting more and more keywords being ranked thereby getting more and more exposure).  The longer clients stay with us, the more profit they make on our work. For example, one of our clients has gone from online sales of 0$ (prior to us), to about 200k in the first year, to now over 1M per annum 1.5 years later. Traffic to their site continues to increase so my hope is that this trend will continue to grow.  Clients who understand and appreciate this compounding effect, and sit through the initial time it takes to get ranked benefit the most.

  • A sound business model – it really helps when a business model is proven itself offline, or through other channels.  99% of the time, if clients are doing well offline, I know we will do even better for them online due to our understanding and focus of keyword targeting => I’m convinced search engines have the most targeted leads in the world if you know how to utilise them.

  • Understanding of their Lifetime Client Value –  99% of the time, I love it when clients only need one client to pay for our service (because that one client, through one purchase or through future purchases will more than pay for our service). Everything else then becomes gravy. This requires an understanding of lifetime client value. This is one of the key indicators marketing indicators you should know for your business.
